Places to Visit in Bath | A Foodie Destination
I adore Bath. It’s one of my favourite places in England outside of London, and it’s so easy to get to even as a day trip. So much so I’ve become well versed in the places to visit in Bath – semi-conducting tours with many friends and family over the years. Disclaimer: This time we were guests of Visit Bath but the multiple visits with overseas guests and for spa weekends with the girls should explain just how much I love this place.
But, one of the things I adore about every single visit to this golden city is discovering something new every single time.
New cafes, different tiny streets to explore, changes to the shopping amenities, new festivals, old markets sharing established businesses, discovering newly opened gardens – alongside all the gorgeous classical reasons for visiting.
Bath always catches my Georgian-architecture-and-Jane-Austin-loving breath.
Famous for their Sally Lunn buns and Bath buns, you can trot to Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House and The Bath Bun teahouse to sample their wares (I’m pretty sure it’s the law when visiting Bath) and there are so many more places to discover along side these traditional treats.
Interestingly the Bath bun story goes that Dr William Oliver, who was born in Cornwall in 1695, created the sweet-flavoured Bath Bun for his patients. (The buns were so successful his patients started putting on weight, so Dr Oliver came up with the less fattening and much plainer Bath Oliver biscuits).
A Sally Lunn is a lot bigger than a Bath Bun and is more like a plain French brioche or French festival bread, baked to a secret recipe. Funnily enough growing up in New Zealand you could (and still can) always buy one of these in supermarkets, topped with icing and coconut. Random, but true.
Many tourists will stop there, but scratch a little deeper – Bath is quite the Foodie destination. From deliciously creamy Bath Blue cheese with less food miles than local bus routes…
…tiny tea houses both Regency and international in flavour…
…epic local cafes full of local mischief and flat whites…
…and restaurants AND ice cream shops that stock local flavours of the cold stuff; I’d absolutely recommend the clotted cream. It’s heavenly.
We nibbled outrageously good handmade fudge in the shadow of Bath Cathedral made with generations of family experience…
…and here are a few scrumptious, locally baked cake slices we tried in a bakery/cafe I wished was closer to my house.
We rounded out our Foodie day with a glass of wine or two at Le Vignoble, trying all kinds of terroir and grapes that reminded us of past travels and (hopefully) foretold of future trips.
I haven’t even mentioned the Argentinian empanadas or tiny Taiwanese bakery paired with French pastry flair.

I do so adore Bath – and there are so many places to visit both historical and foodie. And there’s the amazing natural spa replete with modern complex. What more could you ask for in a city break?
