Royal Horseguards Hotel | 5 Star Hotels in London

Sure, I live in London. But occasionally I just get all outrageous and book a cheeky little staycation right in the centre – who doesn’t love enjoying 5 star hotels in London – especially with a room view like this?

Then being able to get up in the morning and slip home, without any airport queues? It’s the perfect no-fuss break.

Yes, this is central London. The Royal Horseguards Hotel is one of the grand-dames of the 5 star hotels in London; when American friends asked us which hotel they should stay in for New Years, it was the Horseguards and the Savoy that made our suggestion shortlist for their trip. They ended up staying in a beautiful suite in the Savoy (what a New Years that was!)

Check-in was an absolute breeze – even with Covid measures. They were even able to swap my double room for a twin at pretty short notice (the Mr couldn’t make it – he’s still annoyed about that, so less said about it the better!)

I’ve been to the hotel for afternoon tea a couple of times – one of the times there was a harpist serenading us – and spent a fair few hours working on their terrace with lunch and coffee, so I was intrigued to see just what the rooms would look like.

I had booked a double room with a river view, and boy was I not disappointed. (Refer to the first image in this blogpost.)

It had everything you could need; tucked under the eaves, our room had comfortable beds, an entire desk set up perfectly for working remotely, a huge TV, generous mini-bar and was a good size for two people.

The bathroom was typically London in compact-ness; but it was fine (despite what this image looks like – forgive me, I was too busy enjoying the view out over the Thames) and had everything that you need for a quick break.

That view *swoon*.

After attending an event nearby, and an evening cup of tea down in the bar…

…we wandered back up to our room and slept so well tucked under the delicious duvets. It’s always so fascinating to see how busy the Thames is until after midnight(ish) where the noise just settles. The room was double glazed as well – so it was a peaceful sleep once we stopped nattering.

It was the first time either my friend and I had stayed in a hotel for a good while (thanks pandemic) and we both remarked on just how nice it was to enjoy a hotel breakfast after all that time.

There’s something so nice about a hotel breakfast.

Does anyone else do that thing where they semi-make the bed before leaving? It just seems so wrong to leave everything mussed up.

Checking out and leaving the iconic London view behind was kinda hard.

The Royal Horseguards Hotel encompasses two iconic buildings: The National Liberal Club which has played host to historical icons including Churchill, Gladstone and Lloyd-George; and the club’s magnificent apartments which was previously the home of the first chief of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service.

It’s tucked discreetly away in Whitehall – you’re within easy walking distance of Embankment, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square and the South Bank. And of course close to the eponymous Horseguards themselves, patiently putting up with the tourist crowds visit the Houses of Parliament. But as the hotel is so tucked away, you barely notice them until you are upon them.
