Next to actually travelling, I think planning trips is my favourite activity in the world. Making up a spreadsheet, investigating hotels, hunting down flights – and on my wishlist is Albania.

Here are 7 must-visit destinations:

1. Berat, the “City of a Thousand Windows”

This UNESCO World Heritage Site looks like a beautifully picturesque old town with traditional Ottoman houses and a stunning castle. Berat’s historical center is = recognized for its unique blend of Ottoman and Byzantine influences, and well-preserved buildings, including traditional houses, churches, and mosques, offer a glimpse into Albania’s past.

2. Gjirokaster, aka the “Stone City”

I would love to explore the cobbled streets of Gjirokaster, often called the “Stone City” due to its abundance of stone buildings, creating a charming and distinctive atmosphere. The imposing Gjirokaster Castle, perched atop a hill, has panoramic views of the city and beautiful surrounding countryside – and you know how much I adore a castle. It sounds like a must-visit for history buffs and stunning vistas.

3. Butrint National Park

This UNESCO World Heritage Site features ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine ruins, as well as a beautiful lagoon. Surrounded by a picturesque lagoon and wetlands, Butrint offers a serene and natural setting for exploration. Enjoy boat tours, birdwatching, and nature walks. Yes, please.

4. Theth National Park

I would love to immerse myself in the rugged beauty of the Albanian Alps, with towering mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and traditional villages. With towering mountains, crystal-clear lakes, lush forests, and cascading waterfalls, this looks like a truly awe-inspiring landscape.

5. Ksamil

Pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and idyllic islands of this coastal town, and the town is surrounded by several small islands, including Butrinti Island, Sazan Island, and Saint George Island which are easily explorable by boat plus a leisurely swim.

6. Tirana

In Tirana, I’d love to explore the city’s history and vibrant shopping scene, with a variety of markets, malls, and boutiques. Indulge in delicious Albanian cuisine at local restaurants and cafes. Sold.

7. Blue Eye:

Marvel at this stunning natural spring with its mesmerizing turquoise waters. What more do you need to say!

These are just a few of the many incredible places to visit in Albania. With its stunning landscapes, rich history, and friendly people, it sounds like Albania is a hidden gem simply waiting to be discovered.
