Australia by Rail: Scenic Train Journeys On My Bucket List

Australia is a land of vast distances, offering unique and unforgettable travel experiences when explored by rail – ones that the train loving dork in me needs to experience. This is a sponsored post, thank you On Trail Visa.

What to do in Sydney Australia 48 hours Adventures of a London Kiwi

I’ve only explored Sydney and Melbourne so far, but I’m eager to delve deeper into the diverse landscape of Australia. I’m so drawn to the rugged beauty of the Outback and the vibrant culture of the Northern Territory. I dream of witnessing the breathtaking Uluru and exploring the depths of the Great Barrier Reef.

I’m also fascinated by the unique wildlife of Tasmania and the laid-back lifestyle of Perth. Scenic train journeys provide a captivating way to witness the diverse landscapes, from the rugged outback to the lush coastlines, while enjoying pure comfort and luxury.
Here are some of the most iconic rail journeys across Australia that I would love to do:

1. The Ghan: Adelaide to DarwinMy dream is to journey through the arid outback, witness firsthand the vastness of the Red Centre, personally explore the Katherine Gorge, and experience authentically the unique culture of the Northern Territory. I long to ride the Ghan, a true Australian icon, offering an unforgettable journey through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. I can imagine myself gazing out the window, feeling a sense of awe as the landscape unfolds before me. I can almost taste the outback air, hear the rhythmic clickety-clack of the train wheels, and feel the warmth of the Australian sun on my face. This journey would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to connect with the land and discover a deeper appreciation for the Australian spirit.

2. Indian Pacific: Sydney to Perth

How mind-blowing would it be to personally witness the Blue Mountains, traverse the Nullarbor Plain, visit independently the iconic Goldfields region, and witness firsthand the stunning coastal scenery of Western Australia. I yearn to embark on the Indian Pacific, one of the longest passenger train journeys in the world, offering a truly epic adventure for me across Australia. Think of all the blog posts I could write based on my own experiences, capturing the beauty of the scenery through my own eyes… I can see myself sharing stories and photographs, inspiring others to undertake this incredible journey for themselves. Maybe have a Priscilla Queen of the Desert moment or two!

3. Great Southern Rail: Brisbane to CairnsI’ve always dreamed of exploring the vibrant city of Brisbane (and spending quality time with family there), journeying independently through the lush rainforests of the Sunshine Coast, and discovering for myself the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. I believe this journey would be a truly enriching experience for me, allowing me to relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Queensland coastline. I’d love to explore charming towns, meeting friendly locals, and immerse myself in the beauty of the Australian tropics. I wouldn’t be able to wait to share my stories and photographs, reliving the memories of this incredible adventure.

4. The Overland: Melbourne to Adelaide

I’m eager to experience the picturesque Victorian High Country, journey through the Murray River region (famously inspiring a Tim Tam flavour), and explore for myself the historic city of Adelaide. This journey would be a unique and rewarding experience, offering a comfortable and scenic journey through some of the most beautiful and historic regions of southeastern Australia. I can imagine myself enjoying the views from the train window, savoring the local cuisine, and learning about the rich history of the region.

5. The Spirit of Queensland: Brisbane to CairnsI’d be excited to journey through the rugged outback of Queensland, independently visit the historic mining town of Longreach, and experience authentically the unique culture of the Australian outback. This would offer me a unique perspective on the Australian outback, with opportunities to explore remote towns and experience firsthand the true spirit of the country. Meet the locals, learn about their way of life, and gain a deeper understanding of the Australian outback.

What’s not to love – you get to enjoy breathtaking views of the Australian landscape from the comfort of your train carriage as you sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey without the stress of driving. It’s sustainable – train travel is a more environmentally friendly option than flying and you get to meet fellow travelers, enjoy onboard entertainment, and participate in unique activities such as wildlife spotting.
