What to do in Bordeaux | A Blissful City Break

After researching what to do in Bordeaux, we didn’t expect a lot of our long weekend city break. I know it sounds silly, but we were hoping for a pretty city with a side of good wine, and ended up being rather astonished.

Maybe we happened to wander into the lovely areas, maybe we just had the right frame of mind to wander like teenagers gazing at the sunset (sorry, there’s a sick bucket just to the left of your knee) or perhaps because we had no real expectations we couldn’t be disappointed.

We tram hopped our way through the city *cough* occasionally forgetting to timestamp the tickets like clueless foreigners *cough* and just let the things we found on foot or via Google guide us. Ridiculous, no? A 1 hour 20 minute flight from London.

Even our breakfast had a rather lovely morning view.

We were simply having too much fun to do any kind of thinking whilst there.

Just sunny bliss.

On our second day the sun shone, we meandered here and there, spend far too much time gazing at the shifting patterns across the surface of the relatively modern Miroir d’eau (Water Mirror) or Miroir des Quais (Quay Mirror).

Easy peasy.

It is just such a compact city. Sure, you could pace it in a day, but a Belgian gap-year-er we started chatting to had intended to explore the city for a week, and ended up staying for 3.

Tips. Tips, tips tips – oh,

– Every single person I spoke to said not to take a car into the centre city as the traffic is rather hairy.
– Try the wine
– Follow your nose
– Go off tourist season – we visited in early October
– Schedule in a little time around the Miroir d’eau (and take a few camera memory cards)

It was a taste, of how so do you say, je ne sais quoi. Yes, that.
