WHERE TO STAY IN BILBAO: VINCCI CONSULADO DE BILBAO
When it came to deciding where to stay in Bilbao during our long weekend exploring the city (and the extensive art collection of the Guggenheim Museum) whilst there was a surprising amount of choice, when I spotted the Vincci Consulado de Bilbao I knew instantly that it was the hotel for us.
The Mr loves a modern, plush boutique hotel, and that’s exactly what we got.
What he didn’t realise (probably because I didn’t tell him) was that the hotel is a stones throw from the Guggenheim Museum… literally a 3-minute walk – maybe 4-minutes allowing for time to cross the road at the lights. I was getting my design fix even from bed.
The Vincci Consulado de Bilbao 4* hotel is located next to the Estuary of Bilbao, on Abandoibarra Avenue, between the La Salve bridge and the Guggenheim Museum. It’s in one of the city’s most cosmopolitan and vibrant districts – and about a 10-minute walk into the old town for Pinxtos.

The 93 rooms at the Vincci Consulado de Bilbao Hotel had recently opened when we visited – I was really drawn to the bright and spacious rooms and décor made from natural elements.
Cosy, well-sized (this photo doesn’t do the size of our room justice, I think I was cropping out own speedily unpacked luggage) and in immaculate condition, it was just perfect for a city staycation.
Breakfast each morning was a delight – we enjoyed a cold buffet style breakfast with the chef operating a hot eggs station. They had the BEST Tortilla we’ve ever tasted – and have been trying to recreate at home ever since.
The terrace view wasn’t too bad either – I loved settling out there for breakfast, evening drinks and with my laptop of an afternoon.
Overlooking the river banks, the hotel terrace is the perfect place to watch the world go by – one memorable morning there was an enormous parade complete with marching band and dancing girls, all kitted out in traditional costumes.
