The Jones Family Affair | Covent Garden Restaurant Review

Love steak? Love London theatre? Need a fun date restaurant that has great cocktails and some intriguing modern art as a talking point? Enter stage left The Jones Family Affair, this Covent Garden restaurant is one not to miss. Disclaimer: we were invited guests but we’ll definitely be back on our own nickel – all thoughts & steak orders are very much my own.

This Covent Garden steak restaurant is a sibling of their well regarded Belgravia branch; I’m going to say younger, funkier but very much as well put together.

The menu is basically a showcase for their dry aged steak – supplied by Ginger Pig butchers, they’re all scorched on the charcoal-burning Josper grill, and include bone-in prime rib, 55-day aged rump, and everything in-between.

Decided what to order was honestly tough as it all sounded delicious. Though I was almost swayed by the Tamworth pork chop, in the end I couldn’t resist a plate full of steak deliciousness. When in Rome, right?! The steak tartare was one of the best we’ve had in years – perfectly seasoned bites of decadence…

…and the duck egg served on a bed of wild mushrooms, potato rosti, spinach & chive bearnaise was scrumptious. I also really enjoyed my cocktail; the Splash Port Bay with Graham’s no.5 white port, Merlet Poire William, Franklin’s lemonade & lemon was a refreshing as they come. (Traditionally you’d enjoy red wine with steak, but I’m just not that much of a fan, preferring something lighter. Just ask the despairing Bordeaux vintner who tried his best…)

Whilst we enjoyed our starters, we realised just how cool the whole restaurant is…

…filled with quirky modern art. I remarked to the Mr that it’s a great talking point for a date if you’re struggling for conversation (and haven’t been married for over a decade with a small cat to laugh about.)

I simply had to choose the rump steak (medium rare) which was beyond scrumptious. Every time I hit a nibble of perfectly seasoned fat I simply had to close my eyes in pleasure.

The Mr plumped for their filet steak (medium well, I know – don’t raise your eyebrows at me, I’ve managed to talk him down from well done…) and we shared an excellent combination of fries and Cavolo Nero which was perfectly paired with shallots & balsamela.

The dedicated potato side menu, with 7 options made me grin from ear to ear, and caused no end of decision wrangling…

For dessert, I knew straight off the bat what I’d be selecting -I can’t resist anything that has pear or vanilla, so chose the pear Tartin, a very architectural dessert.

How much did the Mr enjoy his salted caramel gelato?

Well, he’s still talking about it a couple of weeks later. (Note the protective hand wrapped around the stem…)

All in all we really enjoyed our meal at the Jones Family Affair – they’ve constructed their menus around steak & cocktail lovers, and they’ve nailed it.
